We all panic when we have water pouring through the ceiling. A little water can do a lot of damage, but you can limit this by knowing your house.
First locate your stop cock and turn it off.
If you have a Combi boiler turn this off as well.
If it’s hot water and you have a hot water cylinder, there is a red handled gate valve in your airing cupboard. Turn it off.
Both the stopcock and gate valve should be maintained yearly as they do seize up.
Depending on the age of your house and the Plumber that installed your sanitary ware there may be isolation valves on the pipes of some of your sanitary ware. With just a quarter turn you can isolate the problem.
(In line with the pipe = on. Across the pipe = off.)
Knowing this can limit the water damage or, better still, an emergency call out charge.
